JUDICIARY’S ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT AND CHANGES ITS NAME

Australian judges and magistrates have a new President of their professional association. Justice Glenn Martin, a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland, has been elected President of the Judicial Conference of Australia (JCA).

The JCA is the representative body for judges and magistrates in all courts throughout Australia. Justice Martin has served as Vice President of the JCA for the last two years.

At its meeting in Canberra over the past weekend, the JCA elected a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Justice Michael Walton, to be its Vice President.

The outgoing President, Justice Judith Kelly of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, was the second woman to be President of the JCA, and has had a long involvement with the JCA.

The JCA has decided to change its name to the Australian Judicial Officers Association, partly because of the potential confusion caused by the use of the word ‘conference’.

In another change, the JCA appointed a new Chief Executive Officer, Lillian Lesueur, to replace Christopher Roper, who is retiring after almost 20 years of service as Secretary of the JCA. Lillian Lesueur is presently the Chief Executive Officer of the National Judicial College of Australia.

The Judicial Conference of Australia is the professional association of judges and magistrates in Australia.
